How To: Style Necklaces

When putting on your jewels to complete your ensemble, do you ever get stumped? I mean how much jewelry is too much, right? Especially when it comes to necklaces. There are so many different styles, lengths, colors and textures.

You've got the subtle necklaces such as dainty little chains with small pendants to crazy over-the-top bib necklaces that have more beads and jewels on it than you could count in one day. Finding the right necklace to accentuate your look can sometimes be complicated!

So with that said, here are a few tips to help you find the perfect necklace that not only looks fabulous but fits your personal style:

Consider the type of neckline your top has:

Both long "Y" shaped necklaces and short necklaces look great with V neck tops.
Take in to account the depth of your shirt, too. I like to always have necklaces stop just above the neckline of a shirt or at least a couple inches below so the necklace doesn't get stuck in my shirt.
Scoop necklines look best with shorter necklaces.
Keep a simplistic neckline (sans the rouching or ruffles) if you plan on having your necklace as the focal point of your outfit.

Now that we have the necklines down, here are a few more tips on styling necklaces:

Go with a simple necklace if you are wearing a super busy or patterned top. Think a simple chain necklace with a small pendant.
If you are planning on wearing solid colors, wearing necklaces with multiple layers and colors could really brighten up what would be a rather dull outfit.

Layering necklaces is another option that really can make your look dazzle.

Another trend going on now is wearing mixed metals. Think bright silver with antiqued gold.

Make a statement by wearing a statement necklace and use it as the focal point of your look.

Sometimes plain old trial and error is the best way to decide what you feel comfortable wearing.

Just make sure you don't try and pull off something crazy like this...unless you like that kind of thing!

Tips on Creatively Displaying your Jewelry

Maybe one of your New Year's resolutions was to go through your closet and tidy up a bit? Well don't just stop there! Organizing your accessories can also allow you to rediscover pieces that were once "out of sight, out of mind".

While jewelry boxes are wonderful, they rarely are large enough to really keep everything in it's own place, untangled, and visible. Most of us don't think to have our jewelry out on display or even creatively displayed... but with these ideas, you can let your creativity, and jewelry, shine!

Create a Jewelry Drawer

Designate one of your dresser drawers for just your jewels. You could use ice cube trays (you know the plastic ones you can pick up at the $1 store?) to help you organize your earrings. Another idea is using an assortment of old cups and saucers.

Be on the look out for unique displays

Places such as TJ Maxx and Marshall's have some really reasonably priced, unique jewelry displays. Even better? Most of them are under $15.oo!

Jewelry Frames

Most thrift stores have a few picture frames lying around which would could be made into the perfect jewelry display. Take the glass and backing out and replace it with screen or rows of ribbon.

Jewelry Trees

Next time you step outside, be on the look out for some fallen branches that could be easily turned into your newest jewelry holder.
Trim the branches to your desired size followed by mounting them into a vase or glassware. Spray painting the branches can really give your new jewelry display a fun look.

Old Things Turned New

This is the time of year when we all take a moment to reflect, change our habits and wipe the slate clean.

Part of that may be self improvement but while the other part may involve cleaning house, reorganizing and trashing the things you no longer use.

But instead of just tossing things in the trash, think about how you could re-use items to turn them into something new!

Here are some really cute ideas using things you probably already to get you started:

Disinfectant Wipe Containers turned into plastic bag storage.

Newpaper Art (You can find the source and instructions at the bottom of this post)

I can't even believe these adorable storage containers were once diaper boxes. I should start to hang onto those diaper boxes from now on!

Take old bread clips and write on them with a permanent marker. This is a clever way to organize all your cords.

Running low on Saran Wrap? Instead of tossing that tube, turn it into beautiful tableware!

Have a few extra straws around your house? You could make this cute chore chart for the kiddos!

New Year, New You..So what about Fashion Resolutions?

When we think of New Years resolutions, I bet a lot of us don't think about fashion resolutions. As mentioned in yesterdays post, the most popular resolutions have to do with weight loss, quitting smoking and eating right. While those are great resolutions, what about considering taking on some fashion resolutions? After all, the new year is about starting fresh and what better way to do just that then to work on your wardrobe, style and image?

With that said, here are just a few ideas to get you on the right stylish track for 2012!

Work on Simplifying your Closet

Do you have stacks of clothing on the floor, shoes jumbled in an unorganized heap or summer clothes still hanging up? January is the perfect month to go through your closet and really organize it.

A few things you can do is get rid of anything that no longer fits or that you haven't worn in the past year. If you haven't worn something in a year, chances are slim that you'll be sporting that piece anytime in the near future.

Another great thing I did over the holidays was to put all like items together. All my cardigans are hanging neatly together, all dresses are pushed towards the back of the closet (since it is a bit to cold to wear most of the dresses I have). All my slacks are neatly folded and put in one area then all my jeans are in another area, neatly stacked as well. (And...I finally parted with my maternity jeans! To be honest, I have no idea why I was so set on keeping them around, they didn't even fit.)

Create a Signature Style for Yourself

Creating a signature style for yourself doesn't have to be a complete wardrobe makeover, it can be as small as just defining yourself through your accessories. To discover your own personal style, think about what you really like to wear. What pieces are you drawn too? Are you attracted to bright colors? Do you just love wearing dresses? Whatever it is that you think may make up your personal style, go with it!

Give yourself a Stylish Challenge this Year

This resolution can be interpreted in many different ways so here are a few ideas to give yourself a little challenge:

Stuck wearing one color all the time? Next time you're in the market for new clothes, go out on a limb and purchase a few pieces in colors you wouldn't typically wear. You might like the change.

If you wear flip flops half of the year, try trading them out for nicer quality sandals.

Try wearing different accessories such as hats to dress up an outfit.

Lastly, Invest in Quality

Every once in awhile, it is okay to splurge on something that you really need. There is nothing better than a nice new winter coat that you know you will get your use out of. Quality pieces can also be an incentive to keep up with your New Year's resolutions.

Kitty Heaven better be filled with Catnip & Peace

I've been quiet around here lately, I know (with exception of my Friday Baby posts that I make myself keep up with)...but aside from that, I haven't had too much to say. It's been a weird past few months. But I did feel compelled to write about Mazda. Yes, my little assistant who has been with us for ten years. He went on to kitty heaven last week. While some may think he is just a cat, he really wasn't, at least not to us. He was a huge part of our lives. He lived with us in Florida, Georgia, Texas and then Cincinnati. He has been through so much with us and the changes we have endured over the past ten years. I mean seriously, this cat even had a Myspace page. Not kidding.

He was so devoted to me and my business. As soon as I would open up my office door in the morning, we would beat me up the stairs with his funny little waddle ready to start the day. He never left my side and always looked forward to our afternoon naps together. He had a thing for boxes and always tried to squeeze his fat little oddly shaped body in something that would be half his size. He always greeted me by purring and never missed a moment to sit on my lap.

While I am thankful that he was able to spend his last Christmas with us in South Carolina, riding the entire 7 hours lovingly on my lap, at the same time am so sad he was never able to make it home from our vacation. I wanted to believe he wasn't sick, but reality set in when we got his blood work back. His kidneys were only functioning at 10%. He stopped grooming himself and started to lose weight rapidly over the past year.

But none the less, even when not feeling his best, he was still by my side, in my arms and on my lap until the day he went to kitty heaven.

I wasn't sure if I wanted to write about Mazda's passing, because I mean, who wants to hear a sad story in the midst of new years resolutions, but it only felt appropriate since he was such a huge part of our family.
No other cat would have tried out all of our baby gadgets or allow us to practice swaddling while anticipating the arrival of Myles. Okay, well maybe, but...he was so devoted to us.

This has been a really rough week. I just keep looking for him. I think I hear him. I still catch myself waiting for him to jump up on the bed. It's just plain hard.

You will be greatly missed Mazda.

Cold Weather Skin Care Tips

Winter can be detrimental to your skin. The dry, wet and cold weather we experience here in Cincinnati can easily replace that beautiful summer glow you once had with not-so-desirable dry and chapped skin.

With that said, here are a few tips to keep your skin in tip top shape during these cold winter months:

Don’t think you have to wear sunscreen in winter? Think again! Even on the cloudiest days, the sun can still be damaging to your skin. This is because UVA rays can still travel through those thick clouds. UVA rays are known to be one of the most damaging things in the environment for your skin. But with applying a little sunscreen, you can protect that beautiful face of yours!

Wash your face. We have all had those days where you don’t wear any makeup, thinking you probably can skip washing your face that day. But oil and dirt will still be there, which can cause you to break out. Just think about it, all the air you have faced throughout the day has particles in it, sticking to that gorgeous face of yours.

Use Skin Care Products. They don’t have to be expensive, because after all, you’ve probably spent your limit on holiday gifts and everything else that goes along with the season. Look for active ingredients such as collagen to firm and oil and Vitamin C to refresh.

Avoid Tanning Beds. If you are looking to add a little color to your skin, consider using a spray tan. They have really advanced over the years, allowing you to get more of a sun kissed look instead of an orange glow.

Change up your Moisturizer. While a certain moisturizer may work perfectly for you in the spring and summer months, it may not be as effective in the winter. As weather conditions change, so,should your moisturizer. Using an oil based moisturizer over a water based one works better in winter because the oil creates a protective layer on the skin that retains more moisture than a cream or lotion. Many lotions labeled as “night creams” are often oil based.

These are just a few things you can do to help take care of your skin during the winter months. But doing things such as wearing gloves and avoiding wet skin in the cold can really make a huge difference.

DIY Project: Boot Socks & Baby Owlet Hat

Okay, so I posted this DIY project over on the blog that I write for almost on a daily basis (cincysavers.com) and thought I must share this with you because these projects were not only easy to do but so much fun to create!

You know what, I bet somewhere in your home, you have an old sweater that you not longer wear. Perhaps your children outgrew their sweaters from last year? Well, before you donate them, consider using your old favorites for a variety of different DIY projects. From home decor to fashionable boot socks, old sweaters can be re purposed into some pretty cool things, all with minimal sewing skills needed.

What inspired me to try my hand at a few ‘sweater projects’ was Pinterest. If you haven’t been on this fabulous site of inspiring images, I suggest you check it out. You can start by browsing our DIY Sweater Projects Board to get inspired for this DIY Tuesday! There are some super talented and creative people out there creating some pretty amazing things out of sweaters.

Alright, so let us get started. I didn’t actually have an old sweater to cut up, so I made a trip out to St. Vincent De Paul last night and found this oversized gray sweater for $2.00. After bringing it home and staring at it for a bit, I though I’d attempt to create 2 different projects out of it. Hey, why not?

I ended up creating super cute boot socks and an owlet hat for my little guy.

Supplies Needed:

Sharp Scissors
Embellishments for your boot socks such as lace, buttons, fringe, ribbon, etc.
Button Thread ( it is a bit thicker than normal thread)
Needle
Felt sheets in various colors (I purchased mine at Hobby Lobby 4/$1)
Small buttons to use for the owl eyes

For the boot socks, I cut off the sleeves of the sweater with the end of the sleeve being the top of the boot sock. I then sewed little buttons onto the top of the sleeves. The idea for this came from this particular pin on Pinterest. You can get an idea of all the creative things you can do with your new fab boot socks.

By the way, if you want them to be more like socks instead of leg warmers, you can sew the sleeves to a pair of warm fuzzy winter socks. I just choose to leave mine more like leg warmers, hemming the bottom of them by hand.

The second project conquered with the remainder of the sweater was a little owlet hat for my baby.

Just so you have a better idea of how I cut all this out of one sweater, here is an illustration:

The sweater I purchased from St. Vincent De Paul happened to have a turtle neck, so I used that as a band around the base of the that, but it isn’t necessary.

Next, I sewed the two pieces of the hat together, then sewed on the band last. Even though I have a sewing machine, I wanted to hand sew it using the thick button thread and an overcast stitch. It gives the hat a more handmade look.

After sewing the hat together, I gathered three sheets of felt from my craft room, a burnt orange, ivory and dark brown. In the dark brown I cut out 2 wide triangles for the owl ears and two large circles. In the ivory, I cut out two more circles, just a tad smaller than the brown ones. Lastly, I cut out another wide triangle fromf the burnt orange felt for the beak.

I then sewed the buttons to the ivory circles to create the owls eyes and glued the dark brown triangles to the top of the hat using the same overcast stitch I mentioned earlier. Using Liquid Stitch, I glued the eyes and beak on, allowing everything to dry overnight. This morning, I went around the perimeter of the eyes and beak with the overcast stitch to help reinforce the felt pieces.

And here it is below, the finished hat! I am so in love with it and it is even cuter when it is on my little ones head!

This one John took tonight while he was grilling. I had Myles up on the kitchen counter so he could watch Adobe and daddy play football. He was hanging onto that window for dear life, laughing the whole time!

DIY Project: Woodland Picture Frame

Learn how to create a woodland inspired wood frame! You'll have people asking you where you bought this awesome piece of home decor and you can proudly say you made it. Not only that, but that you made it for under $5!

Supplies:

Wood picture frame from Michaels $1.00 (this frame stands on its own so no need for a picture frame easel)

Gorilla Wood Glue which runs between $3.00 & $4.00

Saw: It could be small or large, it just needs to be able to cut through various sizes of twigs.

Twigs and small branches

Cute picture of your choice. (I of course, used one of Myles)

1. Go outside and have fun collecting small branches and twigs. It is good to have a variety in size because it creates more interest. Also, having different size pieces help fill in gaps when you are gluing the wood discs to the frame.

2. Saw the branches and twigs into little discs. This can be tedious and take a bit of time. But the end result is worth it! I used a larger saw for the thicker branches and a mini saw I found lying in my garage for the smaller pieces of wood. I can't really tell you how many wood discs you will need to cover the front of the frame. It depends on the size of the discs. My estimate would be about 50 pieces, give or take.

3. Lay on a thick coat of the Gorilla Wood Glue to the front of the wood frame and start adding the wood discs. Again, I made sure to add various sizes throughout to make sure that all the little gaps were filled.

4. Add a picture! The opening is square so I found a picture that I knew would look good even after I cut it to fit into the frame opening.

I love Savannah. I love fashion. So when I was able to attend Savannah College of Art & Design to study fashion, I couldn't be happier. It wasn't easy, that's for sure. There would be times when I was so sleep deprived that telephone polls would appear to be swaying. But those were the good ol' days and I miss them so.
I love to keep in touch with the fashion department, and one way I do is by following them on Twitter. When I read the news about SCAD teaming up with Elle Magazine for NY fashion week, I was super excited. Even better, this video I found. You can see the building in which I spent many days, weeks & years learning the art of sewing, pattern drafting, designing, crying, stressing, you know..all that goes with being in design school.

I seriously miss it, and after I saw three of my favorite teachers in this video it made me sad.
Would't it be nice to be able to go back in time? Even if just for a day? I love my life now but I loved my college life just as much.

Anyway, good luck to all the students who are showcasing their designs at NY Fashion Week!

DIY Project: Pantone Magnets

These are fun. Like really fun! So I am here to show you how to create these colorful little pantone chip magnets that will brighten up anything from your fridge to your filing cabinet at work.

Supplies:

Pantone Chips or for a less expensive alternative (because you may not know someone with a pantone book) you could use paint swatches from a hardware store.

Roll of self-adhesive magnet

Aleenes Paper Glaze (found at Michaels or any craft store)

Scissors

Ruler

White Acrylic Paint

Pencil

Woodsie Wood Chips (I found these at Michaels. 130 wood chips for $2.99)

Paint Brush

Double sided tape

Below is a picture I took of the pantone book spread out before I started cutting out swatches for this project.

Supplies shown below.

1. Measure out the wood chips so they end up being 1" x 1". Luckily all I needed to do was cut mine in half so I measured the pieces then cut them to my desired size. Yes, you can cut through this wood. I had no issues there. I would recommend using an old pair of scissors though, so you don't end up ruining your nice sharp pair.

2. Once you have your 1" x 1" squares all cut and ready to go, the next step is to paint the edges white. Any white acrylic paint will do. On a side note, this can get kind of messy because the pieces you are painting are so small. It's almost inevitable to not get paint on your fingers!

3. Next I selected which colors out of the pantone chip book I wanted to use, then cut them into 1" x 1" pieces. Using double sided tape I then taped the pantone chips to the wood pieces.

4. Almost done! Paint a coat of the Aleenes Paper glaze onto the Pantone Chips to not only seal them onto the wood but to create a glaze like finish.

Let them dry for at least 12 hours. (I learned the hard way and mine got stuck together after toting them off to work with me only an hour after laying down the glaze).

5. Last step, cut 3/4" strips off the self-adhesive magnetic roll and adhere them to the back of the wood and Voila! They are ready to hang! That was pretty simple to get something so cute, don't you agree?

So really, it's been awhile since I have posted anything other than the weekly "My Friday Baby" post, with exception of a few events I was a part of and of course, the new job, which in case you missed that, you can read all about it here.

And I have to admit, I miss you all! Really, I do. With that said, I am going to start sharing some of the writing I do for cincysavers.com and WKRQ.com over here, because I know it is a lot to try and keep track of me in now three different places!

After all, this is a fashion blog and despite posting pictures of a cute baby weekly, you probably also want to read about fashion, find useful tips, learn about new DIY projects and find out about happening events here in Cincinnati. The stuff I used to write about pre-baby.

Okay, okay I am done. This is just a long drawn out version of the two little words that could have said it all. "I'm back!"

Changing Locations

Oh, no...not what you're thinking, I wouldn't move from Cincinnati. It took me thirteen years to get myself back here from moving away the first time. When I am talking about moving locations, I am referring to blogging. I recently accepted a position as Senior Fashion Editor for a local media company, which hosts several other companies under it, such as radio stations WKRQ (Q102), B105, 97.3 The Wolf, WREW 94.1 Rewind and the ever so popular savings site here in Cincinnati, cincysavers.com. My goal as senior fashion editor is to bring you similar content as to what I used to post here (pre-baby) such as Fashionable Fridays, What I Wore and tips on anything from how to get a little creative with some DIY tutorials to tips for the savvy fashionista in you. I am really excited about this. I am finally to the point where Myles isn't quite as time consuming and I will have time to write about other things besides the weekly 'my Friday baby' post. The only problem I foresee is trying to balance running FENNOfashion & blogging full time. But my intuition to this day has never let me down and I know everything will work out. It always does. In the meantime, I am working hard over here creating columns and content and I seriously can't wait to share it all with you!

June Event Recaps

Cincinnati had so many great events going on this June! While I wanted to go to all of them, I was able to get out to two that I would high recommend . I know, just two. Maybe next year around this time my life won't be so hectic.

On Friday, June 17, Fountain Square hosted an Indie Craft Market featuring handmade, unique, Etsy-style art & crafts. Although it was a bit sticky out, with a good chance it was going to rain, there was still a full square complete with music from Wild Talents, Maps & Atlases & Soapland.

The other event I highly recommend for next year is Red, Pink & Blue, which is a fabulous party and fashion show on the Purple People Bridge to benefit heart, breast and diabetes health. FENNOfashion was a sponsor this year, so below are just a few pictures that were snapped of me with friends and all the FENNOfashion accessories on display.

We've been going to Cancun Mexican Restaurant a lot lately & thought Myles should learn the menu.

I will! One of the bigger events I am participating in this year is right around the corner! The Red, Pink & Blue event on the Purple People Bridge. ( I always have to refrain from calling it the Purple People Eater Bridge from the song..ha ha) Anyway, it's going to be a huge event, fashion show, and of course I'll be there with all the new jewelry I have yet to add to the website including handbags (surprise!) and my newest addition to jewelry,RINGS! It's been awhile in the making, but I am very elated to say we finally have a brand new shiny website with all bells & whistles I have have so often dreamed about. I couldn't thank my husband John enough, as he did all the graphic work for me, even down to the smallest details like the adorable little pink shopping cart in the right hand corner.

The ability to create a customer account. Simplicity. Business news in images instead of text & a new format to showcase the accessories available. I am finding out that hard work and patience really does pay off. *smiles*

Product Review: HANAair Hair Dryer

After using the same inexpensive hair dryer since college that would often times spark when using it, I knew I was in the market for a new one. With that said, let me introduce you to my new favorite hair accessory, the best hair dryer I have ever used.

HANAair Professional Hair Dryer

First of all, it is a product you order online, which I am a HUGE fan of shopping online. Not only is it convenient but often times I am able to read product reviews from other consumers where if I were to shop in the store, that usually isn't an option.

The hair dryer is from Misikko and I can't tell you how great the customer service is.

Not only did I receive my package super fast, but the packaging was beautiful!

I can't say enough good things about this fantastic product. The dryer is not only light weight but powerful and it leaves my hair so sleek and shiny!

As for styling my hair, I am now just starting to use the blow dryer and either a round brush or this nifty little comb that also came from Misikko. That is after I add some volumizer to the roots & a little bit of leave in conditioner on the ends. I try not to add conditioner around the roots because I feel as though it weighs down my hair, but I guess it is different for everyone depending on the type of hair you have.

Anyway, the end result is healthy happy hair and a happy Megan. Win Win!

It's Friday. I go to take a picture of the little one for the 'My Friday Baby' blog post. But.. he wasn't having it.

Stay still? Who Myles? Noooo. So all these pictures resulted in me just giving up after about 15 or so and taking a video instead because, hey..at least that won't be blurry (plus it was fun to edit) Enjoy!

Eco-Fabulous Recap

Just a few pictures from the Eco Fabulous Fashion Show that took place March 25th. We all had such a good time. I am so lucky to have so much fun while working. I know a lot of people don't get to say that!

On another note, I can't believe I didn't snap a better picture of Myles in his fashionable outfit. Maybe I'll just put him in it again and take some. I didn't even think how funny it would look to have a baby sporting a collared shirt. Hello! They don't have necks so the shirt was up to his ears. Still, it was super cute.

A little news story & glimpse of a cute baby

We all know babies are super expensive, so when I was asked to give my two cents on grocery prices being affected by rising gas prices, I was excited to share my thoughts to Sara Celi, news anchor for Fox 19 news here in Cincinnati. I had a lot to say (maybe too much?) but they did use a few clips in the news story of Myles & me. It was a fun experience and now I appreciate news stories even more because I know how much work goes into one little short story!

Here's the plan. I am going to post a picture every Friday of Myles, taken that day, to see how much he changes and grows throughout the weeks. Since he was born on a Friday, I am labeling the posts as 'My Friday Baby'.
Today I am playing a little catch up from the previous three weeks (you can't get a lot done laying in bed recovering) But I am happy to say I am feeling better & am slowly starting back to work.
Speaking of starting back to work, I promise this hasn't turned into a baby blog! Once I play catch up & get everything back up in business, there will be more than just cute baby pictures & nightmare labor stories! But as I mentioned earlier, Friday is my day to splurge on the topic of Myles & I can't wait to share all the joy I am getting from being a mom!

the birth experience

Oh where to begin, I guess we could start with a picture.

Above is a picture from when I was first admitted into labor & delivery on February 1st.
The belly looks painful I know, that's why I was so excited & eager to have this baby and get my body back to normal. If only I knew what was to come.
I was being induced, so they hooked me up to the I.V. & started me on cervadil, which is a medication that is inserted on the side of the womb and left in place for 12 hours. The contractions started right away & lasted the entire time the cervadil was in place. But unfortunately, I didn't make enough progress. So round two of the cervadil was administered after having the doctor break my water. Again, I had really horrible contractions & in the end, only dilated 3cm. Next up was pitocin, which is another medication that induces labor but goes through the I.V. I was on pitocin for over 30 hours.
When I finally was dilated to 4cm, I was able to receive an epidural. Thank goodness, because I didn't think I could take another hour, or in my case, day, of contractions and labor pain. The epidural was such a relief until it started to wear off. They had inserted a continuous epi, so I was able to get a 'refill' of the medication by a tube that ran up to my shoulder & was connected to the tube that was in my spine. Two refills later, I was still in an immense amount of pain. Nothing seemed to help. I was then given an entire new continuous epidural again which again, temporarily relieved the pain. The only problem was I was given too much and was numb from my bust line down. If I had dilated completely, the doctors told me I wasn't going to be able to give birth until the medicine wears off just a bit. My legs felt like they were 1000 lbs each and I had the shakes like I was convulsing (a side effect of epidurals) My blood sugar dropped so I was also getting sugar water through I.V. What made this entire situation worse was that I couldn't eat or drink anything, not even water in case a c-section needed to be performed. Even worse, Myles decided to turn his head just enough to get himself slightly stuck in the birth canal.
By early Friday morning after being in labor & having contractions since Tuesday, I was done. I couldn't handle anymore. My blood pressure was on the rise, my heart rate was through the roof, Myles had his head turned & most of all I was weak. There was no way I could have delivered at that point. Doctors started to become concerned too as Myles had his head wedged in the birth canal and his heart rate started to drop. After about 56 hours of contractions, being pumped with fluids & getting sicker by the minute, the doctors made a group decision to go ahead with a c-section.

Myles was born at 5:10am Friday, February 4th.
I remember brief parts of the surgery including feeling the surgeons getting his head out of the birth canal, it was the worst pain I had ever experienced. When shown Myles for the first time, John told me I had a weird look on my face while saying "That's not my baby, that baby is fake." I was really drugged up at that point.
Moving on to postpartum, everything seemed to be going fine. Myles was healthy weighing 7 lbs 5oz & measuring 19 inches long. Then things took a turn for the worse, for me, not the baby. I spent a total of 8 nights & 9 days in the hospital.
Everything is a little foggy but I remember really not feeling good later in the day after delivery. Doctors told me I lost a little bit too much blood during surgery and I was pumped with too many fluids from being on an I.V. for 4 days straight.
To make this long story a little bit shorter, my blood volume was too low for comfort and I ended up having two blood transfusions. The first one didn't do much but the second one I responded well to. My I.V. always had something going, antibiotics to keep me from getting an amniotic fluid infection having had my water broken for so long, iron, saline, etc.
In the meantime, my swelling reached new heights. Doctors said it is a normal way for a body to react when something life threatening happens such as significant blood loss. I was diagnosed with Pulmonary Edema and given lasics, a medicine to help rid the body of excess fluids and that I am STILL on as of today. A side effect too much fluid in your body is having the fluid seep into your lungs & decreasing the oxygen level. I was given an inhaler to help me cough out the fluids and put on oxygen so my oxygen levels didn't fall to low.
A few lung x rays and a heart ultrasound later along with the correct meds, I started to feel a little bit better. Peripartum Cardiomyopathy was also mentioned, which all this just scared me so badly. My heart rate and blood pressure wouldn't go down, which made things worse.
I was finally released from the hospital late Wednesday night & couldn't be happier to bring Myles home. He was actually discharged from the hospital a few days before me but I was able to keep him with me until I was able to go home.

The newest diagnosis I have is for endometritus, which is a infection of the uterus lining, usually showing up a few weeks postpartum. I thought something was wrong again earlier in the week when the internal pain I was experiencing worsened & I developed a fever along with other symptoms.
Anyway, aside from all the medical problems I have encountered over the past two weeks, I say it is still all worth it because I have the most beautiful baby that brings us so much joy! (with an exception of poopy diapers)
